U.S. Geological Survey, UWI, Buccoo Reef Trust, and THA Collaborate on Buccoo Reef Study

In collaboration with researchers at University of the West Indies (UWI), Buccoo Reef Trust (BRT), and the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has been working to investigate the effects of increased atmospheric carbon dioxide on the Buccoo Reef in Tobago. This five-year research project is expected to help determine the impact of ocean acidification on coral reefs.  Buccoo Reef is the only site outside the United States where data will be collected. 

This week, for the first time, USGS will deploy instruments in the reef area which will automatically collect data on water quality, including salinity, temperature, and depth.  UWI professor, Dr. Jennie Mellela, UWI students, and BRT staff will help with data collection and equipment maintenance over the next year.  In November 2008, the equipment will be removed and the data shared among the researchers. 

Information will be made available about public education programs as the study progresses.
