U.S. Department of Interior Engages Trinidad and Tobago Stakeholders on Ecotourism

 Ecotourism
From September 28-30, 2009, U.S. Dept. of the Interior / National Parks officials Don Castleberry and Billy Strasser visited Trinidad, including Caroni, Pointe-a-Pierre and the communities of Matura and Toco to view turtle nesting beaches and exchange views with local NGO Nature Seekers. They also met with the Toco Foundation and were interviewed on Radio Toco about their activities and perspectives.  Dennis Sammy explained how ecotourism and conservation are carried out in the community.

From October 1-2, the visitors travelled to Tobago, to hold a roundtable meeting with tour operators and environmental NGOs to discuss ecotourism challenges.  Visits were also held with the Tobago Department of Tourism, and with the Buccoo Reef Trust to share perspectives and insights on best practices for the ecotourism niche sector.  The team was also interviewed by Channel 5 and Radio Tambrin.
