2008 International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for Outstanding Foreign Students (for Ph.D Study)
The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) is pleased to announce a new International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for outstanding foreign students.
ECA is conducting a worldwide competition for 2008 to select top Science and Technology Award PhD participants eligible for study at prestigious U.S. institutions.
The award is designed to be among the most prestigious international scholarships in science and technology. The International Fulbright Science and Technology award is for PhD study at top U.S. institutions in science, technology, or engineering. The program is funded by ECA and aims to convey the message that the U.S. remains the premier destination for serious scientific study and research. For this first year, approximately 25 awards will be competed worldwide for candidates who demonstrate unique aptitude and innovation in scientific fields. Deadline for applications is May 15, 2008.
PROGRAM DESIGN: Grantees will be enrolled for PhD study at top U.S. universities in the fields of science, technology, or engineering. The Fulbright International Science and Technology Award is a worldwide program. Eligible fields include: Aeronautics and Astronomics/Aeronautical Engineering, Astronomy/Planetary Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Sciences/Engineering, Engineering (electrical, chemical, civil, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum), Environmental Science/Engineering, Geology/Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Information Sciences/Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Mathematics, Neuroscience/Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Oceanography, and Physics.
The Office of Academic Exchange Programs will fund grants for up to three years for this competition. After three years, U.S. universities will be expected to cover the remaining expenses toward completion of a PhD. Placement of students will be handled by a Fulbright cooperating agency.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be citizens of countries where there is an active Fulbright Foreign Student Program and must apply through the Fulbright commission or post in their country of citizenship. Applicants will have completed an undergraduate degree before August 1, 2008.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES: Each applicant will be required to submit an online or paper application along with all supporting documents. The Institute of International Education (IIE) will identify the appropriate U.S. universities for each finalist and submit university applications on his/her behalf.

PROCEDURES FOR CANDIDATES: Candidates will access the online application at https://apply.embark.com/student/fulbright/international. A PDF version of the Science and Technology application can be obtained at www.iie.org/fulbright/apps.
All application materials should be submitted to the Public Affairs Section, U.S. Embassy, 7-9 Marli Street, Port of Spain, by May 25, 2007. A valid Trinidad and Tobago passport will be required for issuance of a J-1 exchange visitor’s visa. Candidates will be notified of their status by November 2007.
U.S. UNIVERSITY PLACEMENT: The Fulbright cooperating agency will be responsible for placement of all Fulbright Science and Technology award nominees and will work closely with the Embassy to ensure the best placement available for the nominee’s field of study and research interests.
FUNDING: All grantees receive tuition, a monthly stipend for up to 36 months, health and accident coverage, a book and equipment allowance, research allowance, professional conference allowance, travel support, and specially tailored enrichment activities.
