U.S. Embassy Makes International Women’s Day Presentations

The Public Affairs Officer of the U.S. Embassy, together with the Embassy’s Educational Advisor and the Public Affairs Section’s intern traveled to ASJA Girls’ College in San Fernando.  Educational Advisor Joy Sandza and intern Joshua McCall presented “EducationUSA,” which is a breakdown of the U.S. tertiary educational system and took questions about studying in the United States. Dr. Michelle Jones, Public Affairs Officer, presented “Women of Influence.”

Dr. Jones’ presentation began with a synopsis of the history of International Women’s Day and the holiday’s focus for this

year: ending violence against women. Dr. Jones also related experiences from her living in Bangladesh that gave students a chance to learn of the violence that is committed against women in that country. The presentation also featured a history of the Women’s Suffrage Movement in the United States, and highlighted many of its pioneers. The presentations were received by 100 students and members of faculty at the girl’s college.

After the presentations, Dr. Jones presented the college with a new collection of books on women’s issues for their school library. The collection included over twenty books written by various authors.
